Ref outing on 22/09/2016 by bornn6
« on: September 24, 2016 »

Had a good day, weather good, walked up estuary and seen a large colony of seals basking on a sandbar. Started fishing but only caught one small sea trout which was realised unharmed. Over the course of the day I saw several good sea trout between 2 to 4lb. My fishing was interrupted when two large seals started hunting fish right in front of where I was wading and a large salmon breached twice close to where I was standing. NO point fishing when seals are hunting. So I walked back up the estuary and gathered cockles. I steeped the cockles overnight to allow them to expel the sand. The next morning I walked up cave hill and had some nice blackberries and hazel nuts from the hedges on the way up and down. When I got home I cooked up the cockles with spaghetti (Italian style) they call it vongole and use clams but it works well with cockles. Freebie from the sea delicious.

Brilliant, can't beat a bit of foraged seafood if you can be sure of quality. Dowser treated me to an awesome Seafood Tagliatelle with a few years back. Was awesome, I'll not be forgetting that one in a hurry!

Hi Redleader,
You and Dowsers camp looked good and your foraged seafood tagliatelle
looked great.I love seafood and the last time I gathered wild oysters was in Galway bay.Theres not too many wild beds left in Ireland.
All the best.
