First solo overnight in the Mournes
« on: August 24, 2009 »

I have been mulling over this all summer(what summer?) and think that it's a case off now or never. My planned route at the minute is as follows................

Start.
Carrick little and follow the Mourne wall to the Summit of Binnian.
Walk the lenght of Binnian cross to Lamagan.
Crawl up Lamagan, summit Cove & Beg.
Cross to the Brandy pad head for Donard.
Camp at Style on bloody bridge side of Donard.

At this point I can either head back down the bloody bridge track or follow the Mourne wall back to Carrick Little

So this dear reader is my plan.

All comments welcome

(And it also gives me great excuse to test the Tadpole 23 I'm buying of nightjar)

I really enjoy solo trips, especially in the mournes! you get a whole different experience when its just you. I would advise you to take a book and/or a little radio/mp3 player becuase it can get pretty tedious on your own!

I've been pondering a solo camp too, just for the experience. I was thinking of Donard Wood beyond the wall where the forest is tight and people don't really go. That said, I was out collecting wood etc in a forest on Sat night and it scared the crap out of me :D Don't know how I'd cope for a whole night on my own.

I can't comment on your route, I still can't place where all the mountains and features are without an OS map.

Jonno the route is pretty a horseshoe off the annalong valley if that helps.

Thats what I'm after chris, seems everything I read at the minute is about solo hikes and I thinks it's a real test of my confidence on the hills. As for the evenings entertainment I just picked up a copy off Ranulph Fiennes' autobiography and as always my trust hipflask.

Hi Andy good Idea for a recce.

I'd certainly reccomend taking a wee radio, I think its nice to have some sort of link with the outside world at the end of a days walking, its also quite nice to have something to drown out the sound of rain on your tent, it becomes very discenring when your radio is at full volume and you can hardly hear it because of the rainfall  :o

Is there a stream/river you're gonna be crossing near the end of the day incase you need to replen water?

A couple of things I'd say is; take a bit more food than you think you'll want; take it good and slow and take plenty breaks; go off your route if you want its not set in stone; try to go when there is a decent forecast atleast for the full days walk, getting soaked to the bone aint my idea of bant, but arriving down in NewC before the heavens fall and be the first one to the pub aint bad ;D

hi walker,
Your right about the food I always seem to bum a bit off food off my usual walking buddy ;D

The water aspect is my only concern but I think I might have a cunning plan. As I come of sleive beg on to the Brandy Pad I'm quite close the the Castles and there is always some water running off here. So I plan to bring an extra empty bottle top fill up. (please note this is to use as cooking water for boil in the bag so no need to purify. This along with 3ltr plus one ltr in the tank before I start out should be enough.

If the shit hit the fan I always as u mentioned have the option off heading  down the Glen river path from the saddle but I hate the idea off punking out so close to the finish( after a few failed mourne wall atempts)
